Officer Message
December 2012 Officer Message by Bill Pike
The History and Future of the New Bedford Chapter #1 of APICS. 1953 -2012
In 1953 a group of New Bedford Production and Inventory Specialist formed
what then was called, “The New Bedford Production and Inventory Control
Association.” After a meeting in Cleveland, Ohio in 1957, the National
organization known as APICS was formed. In February 1958, New Bedford was
designated Chapter #1. The other four chapters formed at that time were
Cleveland, OH, Louisville, KY, Wallingford, CT and Detroit, MI.
Over the years APICS grew and many chapters were formed, and at one time
there were over 70,000 members. As time went on a lot of members who had
received their CPIM certifications perhaps thought that they no longer
needed to be members and the membership of our great society / association
has steadily decreased. Our own NEWB chapter membership has decreased to
just a few dozen members.
Chapters had PDM’s Professional Dinner Meetings) every month with a
speaker bringing the membership up to date on what was new in our
profession. Most chapters usually had a good attendance at these meetings,
but sadly over the years it became harder and harder to get enough members
to make a meeting worthwhile. We are not the only chapter to have poor
attendance at the monthly PDM.
Our professional members have always worked a lot of hours, but it seems
that the effort to make a professional dinner meeting is no longer there.
What has hurt even more is that members are not stepping forward to serve
as board members, and the same people end up serving the chapter for
years, until they just get worn out and retire.
Our chapter has reached a point with there are not enough volunteers to
staff the Board of Directors. For all the above reasons it looks that this
is the last year that the New Bedford Chapter will be active. As of the
first of the year I believe that headquarters will assign you to the
nearest chapter when you renew your membership. Good luck and it has been
a pleasure to have been an officer of the New Bedford Chapter.
Respectfully Submitted,
Bill
